Biography
In an industry where names come and go faster than you can say MC Here-Today-Gone-Tomorrow, Dujeous wants you to learn their name and keep it on the tip of your tongue. The New York collective??™s sound matches their distinctive moniker. Embraced by the underground and ready for the masses, Dujeous embodies hip-hop at it??™s rarely-found finest: fun, full-bodied live music that will make heads nod and posteriors shake while thoughtful lyrics etch themselves in your eardrums.
Dujeous??™ full-length debut, City Limits, was released by Third Earth Music and Caroline Distribution in 2004. The album has received critical acclaim from hip-hop and mainstream media and has been a mainstay for DJs and radio stations, reaching No. 6 on the CMJ Hip-Hop charts. Dujeous has been performing in front of enthusiastic crowds across the globe, from Poland to France to the Teton Mountains in Wyoming, in order to get the word out.
Although City Limits is their first full-length project, Dujeous has been practicing, performing, and perfecting their sound for nearly a decade, and City Limits is the hard-earned culmination of the seven members??™ maturity and musicianship. Energetic MCs Mas D, Rheturik, and Mojo spit introspective, everyman verses, while band members Apex (bass), Taylormade (guitar), Dave Guy (trumpet), and Tomek (drums) infuse boom-bap hip-hop with hints of rock, reggae, jazz and more.
This is no patched-together, cookie-cutter crew. Friends since elementary school, Dujeous formed in freshman year of high school. In 1996, after graduating, they hit the streets and sold their first EP, Leading by Example, hand-to-hand, spreading their sound the old-fashioned way. The word-of-mouth approach paid off, and in 1999 their self-produced and marketed 12-inch ???Breathtaking??? b/w ???Epic Proportions??? attracted a loyal underground following across the nation. They released the 12-inch single ???Spilt Milk??? b/w ???All MC??™s??? in 2002 and As Promised, a compilation of unreleased songs and remixes, in 2003. The buzz grew louder as their live performances filled venues throughout the Northeast and Midwest, and anyone who has witnessed how Dujeous rocks a crowd understands why.
Dujeous has kept good company among music??™s cream of the crop, rocking stages alongside artists such as Busta Rhymes, Slick Rick, Mos Def, 311, Mobb Deep, Cam??™Ron, Kanye West and George Clinton. They have also made a name for themselves in the studio, where they have produced for, played instruments for, rhymed alongside and otherwise collaborated with heavyhitters like Kanye West, Nancy Sinatra, Bob James, John Legend, Saigon, Keith Murray, Purple City, Dip Set, Mark Ronson, Rhymefest, Aesop Rock, Vast Aire, Immortal Technique, Ladybug Mecca, Akir, Subconscious, The Game??™s Black Wall Street crew, DJ Rob Swift, Omen and many more (see attached discography). Dujeous has also branched out into television and film, supplying music for major and indie motion pictures, including Blue Crush, Lift, Kings and Queen, and Just Another Story, television shows such as ESPN??™s The Life, and two award-winning TV ads for The Drug-Free Partnership for America.
Whether on stage or in the studio, Dujeous has already established their staying power within the music world and the international hip-hop community. But after years of laying solid groundwork for themselves, by themselves, they are pushing City Limits to the next level and taking themselves far beyond the confines of a fast, fleeting industry. In just a year, City Limits has sold 12,000 copies and Dujeous has continued to tour the world, tearing down packed venues and building up their loyal fan base. Once you learn their name, hopefully you??™ll also learn a thing or two about longevity.
