Biography

Daso's (day-so) latest project - "Vision" - which fuses everything from Salsa, Afro Latin Caribbean rythms to Puertorican Bomba, Musica Jibara and Hip Hop. "I remember hangin' with my mom at the Nuyorican Cafe' and Charas - those were the days - and what a great inspiration" recalls David. "I mean, who wouldn't get caught up in the community arts revolution performing, watchin' and organizing with people like "Bimbo Rivas, Miguel Pinero, Pedro Peitri, Miguel Algarin, Tato Laviera, Edgard Rivera, Pupa Santiago, Jorge Brandon "El Coco Que Habla", Chino Garcia & Armando Perez - it's contageous". "These Legendary Nuyorican Poets, Musicians and Activists ignited my passion for cultural arts and love for my community" "My greatest inspiration is my mom Angie Hernandez "Bomba y Plena - Choreographer / Child & Youth Community Organizer / Teacher". All of the experiences I had growin' up with these deeply rooted community artists and activists is why I'm doin' what i do now". David Soto has been singing and writing and performing since the age of 7. His first performance was at Lincoln Center at age 8 with the cultural music and dance ensemble "El Grupo Cemi" as a percussionist and vocalist. There was no escaping the "music bug" since the founder and director of el grupo cemi is his mom "Angie Hernandez". It was with Grupo Cemi that he developed a passion for cultural arts, percussion and dance. At age 10 it was Hip-Hop that stole his heart. By the age of 13 he formulated his own Hip Hop Music dance group "The Body Rockers Empire". He also began producing Hip Hop beats, m.c. rhymes, and breakdancing choreographies that were routinely performed on New York and Puerto Rico City Street corners and local venues. When David hit 18, he was intruduced to latin rock by music director and guitarist "Edwin Pupa Santiago". For the next 10 years he performed at live outdoor venues, smoke filled bars and everything in between as the lead vocalist for "A Band Called Loisaida". DaSo has paid his dues and it is evident when he steps on the stage. Daso has also been blessed with the opportunity to become the Director and Community Coordinator of Campos Community Center on 13th Street - Between Avenue B&C where he organizes after-school and youth services. Daso explains "serving children, youth and families on the Lower East Side and having an opportunity to provide educational, recreational, music recording and cultural arts programs has been a dream come true."
